WordPress Plugin

The Live Editor WordPress plugin allows you to integrate Live Editor File Manager into your WordPress blog or site. If you wish, you can also use the plugin to replace WordPress's native media uploader entirely with Live Editor, keeping all of your file storage centralized.

Requirements

We've designed and tested the Live Editor WordPress plugin for use with WordPress version 3.5 or newer.

PHP 5+ with the cURL extension is required.

For browser support, see our system requirements.

You also need an active Live Editor account.

Installation

First, install the Live Editor File Manager WordPress plugin:

  1. Install the Live Editor plugin either via the WordPress.org plugin directory or by uploading the files to your server.

  2. Activate the plugin in your WordPress dashboard.

Configuration

After installing the plugin, you need to do 3 more configurations, listed in the sections that follow.

1. Live Editor account

If you haven't already, you can sign up for an account at LiveEditorCMS.com.

2. Account Subdomain

Each Live Editor account has an account URL that looks something like this:
https://example.liveeditorcms.com/

It's the URL that you use to sign in to your Live Editor account. You'll need to enter that into your WordPress settings.

Browse to your Live Editor File Manager settings in WordPress at Settings > File Manager:

Then enter the subdomain for your Live Editor account into the Account Subdomain field:

3. User API key

Each author in WordPress should have their own Live Editor user account and API key, and they will need to enter it into their WordPress profile settings.

You can log in to Live Editor and generate your own API key in your user profile section.

In the navigation bar, click your name and go to API Key:

Copy the API key:

After logging in to WordPress, browse to your WordPress user profile settings by hovering over your name and clicking Edit My Profile:

Then paste your Live Editor API key into the User API Key field at the bottom of the screen:

Hiding WordPress's media library

The Live Editor WordPress plugin inserts an additional Add Live Editor Media button into your WordPress post and page editors:

While you may want to store some files on your WordPress site and some in Live Editor, it could confuse some of your authors by presenting two different "Add Media" buttons. But if you want to use Live Editor as your only source for storing media assets, then you have the option of removing the default WordPress Add Media button entirely.

Browse to your File Manager settings in WordPress at Settings > File Manager:

You will be presented with two options for hiding default WordPress media library features:

Hide WordPress Media Section from Menu

Checking this will remove the default WordPress Add Media buttons from the top of of post and page editors.

Hide WordPress Add Media Buttons

Checking this will hide the link to the WordPress Media section in the admin navigation.

If you check both of these options, you will remove all traces of WordPress's media library from the admin area. But you also can hide each feature independently, depending on your needs.

Basic usage

The Live Editor WordPress plugin brings all of your uploaded files and some of Live Editor's functionality directly into WordPress. It also allows you to upload files into Live Editor from WordPress so you don't need to log in separately to your Live Editor account in order to do so. No need to interrupt your writing process just to upload files for your posts and pages.

Inserting Live Editor-hosted media into your posts and pages

You're authoring a post or page in WordPress and want to add a file to it that you already have uploaded to Live Editor.

While authoring your post or page, click the Add Live Editor Media button to pull up the Live Editor file browser:

Find your desired file by paging through your files, using the search filter, or narrowing by collection or file type. This is very similar to finding files in the main Live Editor interface.

Once you've located the file that you would like to add to your WordPress content, click the Insert into post/page link to add it to your content:

If the file is an image, audio file, or video, it will appear embedded in the WordPress post. For all other file types, a text link to the file will be inserted into the post.

Note: When you insert a file using the WordPress plugin, Live Editor will also track a usage record for the WordPress post or page for you automatically.

Uploading files into Live Editor from WordPress

You can also upload new files into Live Editor while editing a post or page in WordPress.

While authoring your post or page, click the Add Live Editor Media button to pull up the Live Editor file browser:

In the popup window's global navigation, click the New File link:

The uploader works similarly to the main Live Editor uploader. You can drag-and-drop files into the uploader or keep a record of a YouTube or Vimeo video.

After uploading a file, you will receive a message indicating that the file upload has finished and that the system is processing the file:

If you wait a moment, the Processing file... Please wait message will be replaced with a link to insert the newly-uploaded file into your WordPress content:

Clicking the Insert into Post/Page link will insert the newly-uploaded file into your WordPress post or page. If the file is an image, audio file, or video, it will appear embedded in the WordPress post. For all other file types, a text link to the file will be inserted into the post.

Depending on the type of file that you uploaded, the processing may take some time. This is especially true for videos and large files. You can always close the Live Editor window and come back to it later to check and see if it’s finished processing.
